Chapter 21: Two Voices

By nine on Thursday morning the line outside Founders' Hall ran down the steps and around the lawn.

Students stood in it with coffee, and women in good coats, and a man from the Duluth paper with a notebook.

My mother went through the doors ahead of me with her cane, and a boy stepped aside so fast he dropped his phone.

"Front row," she said. "I'm not asking."

The hall held four hundred, and the seats were gone by nine-fifteen.

The livestream camera stood in the middle aisle, with its red light on.

Five trustees sat at a long table on the stage, with a pitcher of water and a gavel.

Yvonne sat in the middle chair, in navy, with her pearls and her folded hands.

On her left sat the retired judge from the dean's office.

On her right sat the dean, who did not look at her.

Mr. Marlow sat in the front row with Mamie beside him in the white coat.

Tripp sat three rows back, alone, with his hands between his knees.

Knox took the aisle seat on the far side of the hall.

He sat where no photograph could put the two of us in one frame, and I had not asked him to move.

Yvonne lifted the gavel at ten.

"This hearing concerns an entry to the Holloway Fellowship," she said, in her warm, carrying voice.

"It concerns a complaint of academic dishonesty against an applicant, Siri Lindqvist."

"Ms. Lindqvist, please come forward."

I walked down the aisle.

It was a long aisle, and I knew it by heart.

I stopped at the lectern where I had once laid a letter, with the same microphone and the same camera.
