Chapter 15: The Report
Skye took a folded paper out of her coat pocket and held it out.
I didn't take it.
She tucked it into the strap of my bag.
"Derek had it pulled in September," she said. "For leverage. He keeps everything."
Then she put her sunglasses back on and walked away down Adams Street, in her cream coat, past the crew without a glance.
Luke's truck honked at the curb.
His mother waved from the passenger seat.
I put the paper in my pocket and got in the back with the dog.
I didn't read it until we were home.
I read it in my old room at the end of the hall, with the door shut.
Ithaca Police Department. Incident report. August, fifteen years ago.
Assault in the third degree. One victim, a female, nineteen, laceration to the upper back.
Taken at Cayuga Medical Center at 1:40 a.m.
And at the bottom, a statement in blue ballpoint.
Block capitals, pressed so hard I could see the ridges in the photocopy.
I THREW THE FIRST BOTTLE. NOBODY ELSE DID. I'M SORRY ABOUT THE GIRL.
