Chapter 5: Midnight Confessions
The poster on the elevator wall said MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONS LIVE! in pink neon letters.
Under it was Skye's face, glossy and huge, with a finger to her lips.
"I hate her teeth," Tamara said. "Nobody's teeth are that straight."
"You don't have to come up."
"I'm a public defender. I've sat through worse than a podcast."
The rooftop bar was on the thirty-second floor of a hotel off Times Square.
Heat lamps. Fairy lights. Two hundred women in cream knits drinking pink cocktails called the Soft Reset.
Steady's logo was on every napkin.
On the little stage, Skye sat on a white velvet stool with a microphone in both hands.
In the front row, in a gray quarter-zip, sat Derek.
He was holding her drink.
I didn't know why I'd come until I saw that.
Then I knew.
Skye ran the show.
She read listener letters in a breathy voice. She gave out Steady promo codes. She told a girl whose boyfriend forgot her birthday to protect her peace.
Then she leaned into the mic.
"Okay, my loves. You've been asking for it. Here's our most-played confession of the year."
The crowd squealed.
A clip played over the speakers.
It was the same clip from my car radio, only louder, with a crowd to laugh at it.
The whole roof laughed.
A woman beside me said, "Oh my God, the poor guy."
Skye pressed a hand to her chest.
"Our anonymous founder. I think about him all the time. Ladies, don't be her. Don't be the bitter old girlfriend who traps a man with guilt."
