Chapter 7: Daylight
Do-yun counted his starts again at dawn, and there were forty-one.
He had laid them out across the floor of the east room.
Every sheet had the same neck and the same ear and the same empty oval.
He knelt among them in his shirtsleeves with ink under his nails, and could not understand it.
He was the best face-painter of his year.
He had caught the Bureau Master's wife in an hour, and a cranky provincial governor in forty minutes.
Gyeol's face was the most beautiful he had ever seen, and every time he looked at it, it moved.
Captain Jang had come and gone with the breakfast tray, and had not asked about the work.
That was a new silence, and Do-yun did not like it.
He pushed the sheets into a pile and went out into the yard to wash his hands at the well.
The sun was only just coming over the wall.
It lay in a low gold bar across the packed earth and the woodpile, and made the frost on the gate steam.
Do-yun stood there with his sleeves rolled, and found himself looking at the main building.
The shutters were closed on every window but one.
On that one, a single slat had been propped open a finger's width.
He walked over before he had decided to, and the door slid back under his hand.
