Chapter 18: The Dress
Mavis had laid three garment bags across the bed in her spare room.
"Silk," she said, unzipping the first. "Emerald."
"I wore it to the governor's dinner in 1998."
"A senator told me I looked like a jewel thief."
"It's beautiful."
"It's loud," said Dolores, from the armchair. "She'd look like she's trying to win a prize."
"I am trying to win."
"You're trying to win a courtroom, kid. Wear the suit."
I had known which one I would wear since the night at the hotel.
Mavis knew it too.
She had unzipped the other two bags only to let me say no.
"The navy," I said.
She nodded slowly and lifted it out.
It was the same suit I had worn to brunch, the narrow skirt and the jacket cut sharp at the shoulder.
She had had it pressed.
She held up the jacket, and I slid my arms into it, and it settled on me.
"It's tight in the hips," Dolores observed.
