Chapter 21: The Original Letter

Dear Lark,

I was the woman in the Lark Presents letter. Somebody read my private words aloud with an ad stapled behind them. I would like to see the person who did it.

Awake in Auburn

That arrived at the new address on Wednesday at six in the morning.

Marguerite read it at my desk and went the color of paper.

"Gordon mailed the Lark Presents preview to every reader he used," she said.

"She got her own letter in the mail, with a sponsor on the back."

"He mailed it to her?"

"Eleven readers. He called it a preview."

I felt a rage I did not know I could hold.

"We're going to Auburn," I said.

"We have to close the Friday issue."

"Robin can close the issue. Robin loves a deadline."

"Robin wants to murder him," Marguerite said.

"Then she'll be motivated."

We drove down in my old Civic, with Marguerite folded into the passenger seat with her knees nearly at the dash.

She directed in a clipped voice, reading the address off her phone.

It was a small beige house with a basket of dying chrysanthemums on the porch.

A woman answered the door in a cardigan, with dark circles under her eyes and a dishtowel in her hands.

She looked from me to Marguerite.

"You're not what I expected," she said to Marguerite.

"No," Marguerite said. "I'm not."

"You're her."
