One of them carried a tablet and said almost nothing.

The other was the rep, with sleek hair and a voice.

Gordon led them through the fourth floor.

Marguerite followed three steps behind with her hands in her coat pockets.

Her eyes took in everything and gave nothing back.

I was at my desk pretending to proofread when Gordon stopped by it.

"And this is Hallie Park, one of our promising juniors," he said. "Hallie, would you walk our guests through your ferry feature? Five minutes, in the conference room."

"I'm not ready," I said.

"You're ready," Marguerite said, from behind him.

It was the first thing she'd said since they came in.

So I carried my laptop into the big room and stood at the end of the table with my heart in my ears.

The rep sat down and crossed her legs.

I started with the man and his dog.

It was just a story about a man who bought his dog a seat on the Vashon boat.

An old woman across the aisle started saving the dog a croissant.
