Chapter 22: Two Sisters in the Dark

Sabine hit the door again with the flat of her hand.

Then she stopped, because there was no point.

A minute later the bulb over our heads went out.

The switch was in the kitchen.

My mother had come back for it.

The dark was total for one second, and then my eyes found the grey square of the painted window at the far end.

I turned on my phone's flashlight.

No bars.

Not one.

"What time is it?" Sabine said.

"Ten past one."

"She'll come back." Her voice was high and thin. "After they leave. With a bottle. She'll open the door and say we were drunk and fell."

"She won't get the chance."

"You don't know that!"

"Ambrose is parked two doors down. He comes in at a quarter to two."

"Through that?" Sabine pointed her own phone light at the oak. "That door is a hundred years old."

"So is Gran," I said. "She's still standing."

I went down to the window.

I stood on a wine crate and scratched at the painted glass with my keys until a fingernail of daylight came through.

I held my phone up to it.

Nothing.

I got down.

Sabine was sitting on the bottom step with her knees pulled up, her face in the light of her own phone, mascara-free, twenty-two and looking about twelve.
