Chapter 5: The Club

At seven on Sunday morning, Ambrose came into his own kitchen in a grey T-shirt and found me at the table with a cold coffee and the vial.

"You didn't sleep," he said.

"Did you?"

"I don't, much." He held out his hand. "Give it here."

I hesitated.

He waited, palm up, without saying a word.

I put the vial in it.

He sealed it in a padded envelope, wrote on it in square capitals and handed it to a courier at the front door who looked like he'd been woken up for it.

"A private toxicology lab in Cambridge," Ambrose said, coming back. "They test our paint crews for solvent exposure. The director owes me a favor."

"On a Sunday?"

"I told him it was for somebody's grandmother. He has one."

Gran walked in wearing his bathrobe over her nightgown.

"Your guest bed is too hard," she told him.

"I'll buy a new one."

"Don't, I slept like a log. I just wanted you to know I noticed." She sat down. "Who's making breakfast?"

Ambrose looked at me.

I looked at him.

"I can make eggs," he said, like a man admitting to a crime.

While he did, I told Gran about the text.

She didn't say anything for a while.

Then she put down her fork.

"Your mother has brunch at the club every Sunday at eleven," she said. "Same table, by the window. Six of the worst women in Massachusetts."

"I know."

"So go and ask her."

The club was on Commonwealth Avenue, all dark wood and silver coffee pots.

I walked in at twenty past eleven in the green dress I'd worn to the party, because it was the only nice thing I'd packed.
