Chapter 13: Fifty-Two Percent

Damon stood in the steam with the tablet in his hand and did not remember crossing the room.

The bathroom door had been open.

Elias was under the shower with his back to him and his head bowed, and the water ran down the long muscles of his spine.

Damon turned the tap off himself.

The silence was enormous.

Elias turned around slowly, and his eyes went to the tablet before they went to Damon's face.

He did not reach for a towel.

"Harbor Street Capital," Damon said. "Managing Member."

"Yes."

"Fifty-two percent of my company," Damon said.

"Yes."

"You told me last night you were the contact on file."

"I lied to you," Elias said. "In bed. I'm sorry for that part before any other."

His voice was low and perfectly level, and water ran off his chin.

Damon had seen him give bad news to boards, to donors and to a widow in a corridor, in exactly that voice.

He had never had it aimed at himself.

"Tell me," Damon said. "All of it. Start where it starts."

Elias took a towel from the rail and wrapped it round his hips.
