Chapter 19: Moving Day
The staircase went in on a Saturday, eleven days after the box, and Moira Doyle supervised it.
She stood in the hole where the wall had been, in her puffy coat, with a clipboard she had borrowed from nobody.
"That's a load-bearing joist," she told the contractor.
"It isn't, ma'am."
"It is today."
Damon watched from the kitchen island with a coffee, shirtless under an open robe, thoroughly happy.
The ceiling between 14B and the floor above had come out in a clean rectangle.
A walnut stair with a black iron rail dropped through it, from his study to Elias's living room, and winter light poured down it.
"Two flights," Moira said. "Two sets of bills. You'll want a hallway runner."
"We have a runner," Elias said.
He came up the new stair with a carton in his arms, in jeans and a grey sweater, with dust in his hair.
Damon thought he had never seen anything better in his life.
"Doctor K, you've not unpacked a thing," Moira said.
"I've unpacked a bed."
"A bed isn't a kitchen."
By noon the movers had carried up thirty cartons of Elias's books, and Damon had been told three times to stop reorganizing the spice rack.
By two, he and Elias were not speaking.
It was the pan.
It was a black cast-iron skillet, twelve inches, seasoned over six years of Elias's Sunday eggs.
Damon had found it on the drying rack after lunch, and put it in the dishwasher with the plates.
"You put it in the dishwasher," Elias said.
