Chapter 8: The Thursday Woman
The woman from the gallery was kind about it, which was the worst part.
She sat on the edge of Damon's bed at midnight in her slip, her long dark hair over one shoulder.
She watched him lie there with nothing happening.
He had been trying for fifteen minutes.
She was beautiful, she smelled of bergamot, and she knew exactly what she was doing.
His body had not moved a muscle.
"It happens," she said.
"It doesn't happen to me."
"It's happening to you now." She smiled, not unkindly. "Damon. I only came tonight because I wanted to see your face when I told you."
"Told me what?"
"Your friend called me last Tuesday. Very polite. He said you wouldn't be calling again."
She stood and pulled on her dress.
"I thought he was joking. Then I saw you at the door with your hair all wrong, a man who'd been somewhere else all week."
"He called you."
"I'd tell him thanks," she said, "if I were you. Or hit him. Hard to tell." She kissed his cheek, took her bag and left.
Damon lay in the dark for exactly as long as it took to find his sweatpants.
Then he went down the back stairs in bare feet, one floor, to 14B, and did not knock.
He had a key.
It was a quarter past one in the morning and the apartment was lit by a single lamp.
Elias was standing in the middle of the living room in an old grey T-shirt and pyjama bottoms, with a book in his hand.
He had been waiting.
He put the book down.
"You called her," Damon said.
"Yes."
"You told her I wasn't calling," Damon said.
"I told her the truth."
"The truth is I decide who I call!"
Damon crossed the room in three strides and shoved him with both hands, as hard as he could, against the wall.
Elias hit it and did not resist.
