The Poison Master Knocks Every Night With the Antidote novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Cup
At the hundred-day feast Jae-ryeong tastes frost in the plum wine, crosses the hall to pin the beautiful cupbearer against a pillar, and learns the terms: forty-nine nights of antidote, from Seol's own hand only. He lets him walk out; at midnight someone knocks on his window.
The man who poisoned Han Jae-ryeong had beautiful hands, and Jae-ryeong watched them the whole way across the hall.
It was the hundred-day feast for his father.
Four hundred guests of the Cheongrim Sect sat along the low tables, eating the dead lord's pheasant and staring at the dead lord's son.
Jae-ryeong was twenty-seven, he was the new lord, and he was bad at being stared at.
So he drank when they drank, and smiled when they smiled, and tasted nothing.
Then the cupbearer filled his cup with plum wine, and he tasted that.
The cupbearer was slender and pale, in a plain green servant's robe.
His hair was so long it brushed the floor when he bent.
It was black at the ends and silver at the roots.
His hands wore silk gloves, and the gloves did not shake.
"For the lord's health," the cupbearer said.
He said it softly, with his eyes down, and Jae-ryeong saw a thin mouth that could not stay still.
Jae-ryeong drank, because his uncle was watching.
His uncle had been watching him for a hundred days.
The wine was sweet for one breath.
Then something cold slid down his throat and settled behind his ribs.
His cup hit the table.
The cupbearer was already walking away.
He did not run.
That was what Jae-ryeong noticed, even as the cold crawled into his arms.
A man who had poisoned the lord of a sect should run.
This one walked toward the pillar by the east door.
"Lord Han?" Uncle Pil-gu said, from far away.
Jae-ryeong stood up.
His legs worked.
They worked for three more steps, and he used all three to cross the hall.
Four hundred guests went quiet in a ripple.
He put one hand flat on the pillar beside the cupbearer's head.
With the other hand he caught the cupbearer's wrist, the gloved one, and felt the pulse through the silk.
It was fast.
The man was afraid, and he was standing there anyway.
"You poisoned me," Jae-ryeong said.
His own voice sounded thin with cold.
"Nine Thorns Frost," the cupbearer said.
His eyes came up, and they were grey, the grey of the sky before snow.
"Don't talk too loud, my lord. It climbs faster when your heart is angry."
"Who sent you?"
"Nobody who will be standing here at the end of this sentence." His mouth twitched.
"Listen, because you have about three days."
Behind Jae-ryeong, steel left a sheath.
"Captain Baek, no," he said, without turning.
His guard captain, Do-yun, stopped three paces away with his sword drawn and the scar across his nose gone white.
"The poison takes forty-nine nights to cure," the cupbearer said, quick and clear, entirely matter-of-fact.
"You need one cup a night, at the hour of the rat, with eleven needles along the spine to carry it down."
"I make the cup myself."
"It is brewed fresh, and it is useless by the next dawn."
"Kill me, and you die on the third night, and so does the cure."
"You're lying," Do-yun said.
"I'm a poison master," the cupbearer said. "I lie for a living."
"I just don't lie about this."
Jae-ryeong stood there with his hand around that wrist and the cold spreading, and he could have snapped the bone.
Everyone in the hall was waiting for him to do it.
His uncle had half risen from the high table.
Pil-gu's face was very still, and there was something under the stillness that Jae-ryeong could not read.
He looked down at the poisoner.
The man was a full head shorter than he was.
This close, Jae-ryeong could see a pale scar along his jaw.
He could see a single silver hair stuck to his lip.
He thought, absurdly, that he wanted to brush it away.
"What's your name?" he said.
The poisoner blinked.
It seemed to be the one question he had not prepared for.
"Yeon Seol," he said.
"Seol," Jae-ryeong said. "Snow."
"It was a village name. Let go of my wrist, my lord, you're bruising it."
His voice caught on the last word.
He looked, for a moment, shocked by his own words.
Jae-ryeong let go.
The hall made a sound like four hundred people breathing out.
"Captain," Jae-ryeong said. "Open the gate."
"My lord, he's an assassin."
"He's a poisoner with my cure in his sleeve. Open the east gate and let him walk out."
Do-yun stared at him.
Then he sheathed the sword with a snap, and his face said they would be having words later.
Seol straightened his sleeve.
He bowed, a small, correct bow, the bow of a man who had done this before and would do it again.
He walked down the length of the hall, past four hundred martial artists with their hands on their hilts.
Nobody touched him.
At the door he glanced back once.
It was not a look of triumph.
Jae-ryeong could not tell what it was.
He sat down in his father's seat.
His uncle came to his side and said, in a voice full of concern, that he was white as paper and must go to bed.
The cold was in his chest now, slow and patient.
Jae-ryeong went to bed.
He lay in the dark in his father's room, under his father's blankets, and counted hours while the cold climbed.
Eleven struck.
Then midnight, the hour of the rat.
He had decided the poisoner would not come.
A man who poisons you does not bring the cure, and Jae-ryeong had been a fool to let him walk.
He was lying there, calling himself every name his father ever called him, when someone knocked on the frame of his window.
Three times, gently.
Nobody who had ever wanted him dead had knocked.
