Seol woke on the folded robe in the pale morning and saw Jae-ryeong's face.
"What?" he said.
Jae-ryeong said nothing.
Seol looked down at his own arm, and his sleeve, and the bare skin showing.
Quickly, calmly, he pulled the cloth over it.
"Those are old," he said.
"Some of them are two days old."
"A poison master tests his own work. Did you think I'd try an antidote on a stranger first?"
"Seol."
"It's the trade." Seol sat up, smoothed his hair, and gave a rueful smile. "Look at me. Do I look like a man who does anything the safe way?"
It was a good answer.
It was the answer of a clever man who had had years to prepare one.
