Chapter 17: The Road to the Assembly

The inn at the foot of Mount Gyeryong had one good room and a landlord who did not ask questions.

Jae-ryeong was a travelling lord, and Seol was his healer.

Do-yun was their servant, and he was already snoring through the wall.

At dusk they had bled into a tea bowl on the floorboards, because the herb shed was three days behind them.

Seol had mixed the gold cup on a travelling brazier, and Jae-ryeong had drunk it at the hour of the rat.

Now the cold was gone, the lamp was low, and tomorrow the whole murim would look at them.

Jae-ryeong sat on the edge of the bed and unpinned his topknot.

His hair fell past his shoulders, and Seol looked at it.

"Come here," Seol said.

"You come here."

"I'd like to try something."

He stood in front of Jae-ryeong in his plain grey healer's coat, with his gloves off and his silver hair loose.

He put one bare hand on Jae-ryeong's chest and pushed.

Jae-ryeong went back onto the blankets.

"Seol."

"Stay there."

Seol climbed onto the bed and knelt over Jae-ryeong's hips.

His weight was light, and his eyes were not.

"I have spent two weeks of nights under you," Seol said. "I'd like a turn."

Jae-ryeong's mouth went dry.

"A turn at what?"

"At you."
