Chapter 23: Silver
They rode home through the snow, and neither of them said ten words.
At the gate the disciples lined the road in two long rows and bowed.
The old sword master stood at the head of them with tears running down his face.
Do-yun had gone ahead.
By the time they reached the north wing, there was a fire in every brazier.
A pot of Do-yun's rice sat on the stove.
A new paper screen hung across the door of the empty room beside Jae-ryeong's.
"I didn't choose it," Do-yun said, hovering. "It was already there. Goodnight."
He went away at speed.
Seol stood in the doorway of the room and looked at it.
It was small, with a low bed, a shelf, and a window onto the pine garden.
Someone had put a vase of winter plum on the sill.
Seol crossed the floor, touched the vase, and touched the bed.
"I've never had a door that shut from the inside and meant it," he said.
"It shuts from both sides."
"What if I leave it open?"
"Then I'll walk in."
"That was my plan," Seol said.
They ate Do-yun's rice, sitting on the floor of Jae-ryeong's room.
Seol ate two bowls.
He had pickled his own radish, he said, with great scorn, to show the cook how it was done.
Then the hour of the rat came.
Jae-ryeong felt it come.
He had felt it every night for a month.
It was a prickle at the back of the skull and a small cold hand reaching toward his ribs.
