Chapter 9: Behind the Wall
They got back to the sect at dawn, with the envoy's riders an hour behind them.
Do-yun had bribed a milk seller for her cart, and Seol went in through the north gate under a pile of cabbages.
By the time the Alliance envoy rode in under the sect's gate banner, Jae-ryeong was waiting in the courtyard in his formal robes.
The envoy was a lean man of sixty with a hat of black horsehair and a very dry face.
He did not give his name.
Envoys never do.
"Lord Han," the envoy said, and inclined his head one finger's width. "I am here on behalf of the Alliance. There has been a report."
"Of what?"
"We will discuss it at the banquet."
Pil-gu had arranged one, naturally.
It was held in the great hall, with forty tables and a hundred dishes, and a row of musicians who played with tremendous feeling.
Jae-ryeong sat at the head beside the envoy, with Pil-gu on the envoy's other side.
Pil-gu was in glorious form.
He told stories, poured wine, and laughed with the elders, and not once did he mention the sword trial.
Jae-ryeong ate nothing.
Do-yun had hidden Seol in the old wall passage.
