Chapter 24: The Wren

The new lock on my apartment door was brass, and it had cost ninety dollars, and Cade installed it himself on Saturday afternoon.

He tested it six times before he came to bed.

On Sunday morning the sun lay across my one-bedroom in Sparks in long yellow bars, and I woke up with his arm around my waist.

It was the first time in two years and nine months that he had not slept on a cot.

I turned over.

He was awake, watching me, with his hair a mess and the gray in his eyes gone soft.

"The note's due today," I said.

"Is it?"

"It's confetti in a dustpan behind the cage."

He smiled, and I kissed him.

It started slowly.

His mouth was warm, and he tasted like sleep and mint toothpaste, and I slid my leg over his hip to get closer.

His hand moved down my back to my ass and pulled me against him.

He was already hard against my belly.

"Pamela," he said, low.

"Take your time," I said. "I'm not going anywhere."

"That's what I want to hear."

He rolled me onto my back and settled between my legs, and the sheet slid down around us.

He kissed my throat, then my breasts, taking each nipple into his mouth until I arched and begged him.

His beard scraped my skin, and I loved it.

He kissed down my belly, slowly, the way he did everything that mattered.

When he put his mouth on my pussy, I made a sound that I would have been ashamed of in any other room.

He licked me in long, patient strokes, circling my clit, then sucking it until my thighs shook.

I fisted my hands in the sheets and then in his hair.

"Don't stop," I said. "Don't you dare stop."
