Chapter 12: Fixable
I carried the lid across the yard with both hands.
Nico was at the shallow end with the net.
He looked up, and I watched him see what I was holding, and I watched the color leave his face from the top down.
"Come here," I said.
He put the net on the deck and came.
I held the lid up between us so he could read it.
"N.R., 4/14, Z3," I said. "That's you."
He didn't deny it.
He stood there in his wet polo with his hands at his sides, and the pump ticked, and a dove started up on the wall.
"Tell me," I said.
"April fourteenth," he said. "My second Tuesday. I came at 9:40 and the north wall was wet."
"Wet."
"The tile had a green line on it, right at the waterline. The deck was wet. It was dry everywhere else."
He swallowed.
"The sprinkler on that side comes on at five-fifteen. Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. It throws lawn water over the wall into the deep end," he said.
"Lawn water."
"With fertilizer in it. That's what turns the pool green. It's nothing wrong with the pool. It's the timer."
I looked at the lid.
