Chapter 24: Tuesday
I was in the water when the gate latch clicked at 9:40.
I floated on my back in the middle of the pool in a black bikini, with my hair loose and my eyes on the sky.
The sun was already hot on my stomach.
The water was perfect.
It had been perfect for six weeks, and I still checked it every morning.
"Morning," said Nico.
I turned my head.
He stood at the edge of the deck in his polo and work shorts, with the NICO patch over his heart.
He had the net on his shoulder.
He had it out of habit, the way he'd had it every Tuesday since April.
"The pool's fine," I said.
"I know."
"There's nothing to skim," I said.
"I know."
"So why did you come?" I said.
He considered the question.
He set the net down against the fence, and took off his boots, and put them side by side on the warm stone.
"It's Tuesday," he said.
I laughed so hard I swallowed water.
He was in the pool before I'd finished coughing.
He came through the shallow end in his shorts and polo, with the water climbing, and I swam to the steps to meet him.
I sat on the top step, the one where it had started, with the water up to my ribs and the sun on my face.
He stopped in front of me, chest-deep, and put his hands on my knees.
"This one," he said, looking down at the stone. "I remember this one."
"Don't get sentimental."
"I'm not," he said.
"You're blushing."
"It's the sun."
"It's the sun," I said, and took the front of his wet polo in my fists and pulled him in.
I kissed him there.
