Chapter 19: The Winter Gala

I looked at the yellow tab for a long moment.

Then I looked at her.

"You drew this up before you knew I'd say yes."

"I drew it up because you're sensible." Theresa smiled. "You were always the most sensible girl on that staff. You knew which guests tipped."

"I did," I said. "You never did."

Her smile thinned a little.

"Let me tell you what Saturday looks like if you're stubborn." She tucked a strand of blonde hair behind one pearl. "Your husband admits to two hundred people that he spied on his wife. The student cries again. And I read your letters aloud, the parts I haven't sent yet. The ones about what you like in bed."

"You've read those."

"I've read all of them." Her voice went low and warm, the voice from the pastry case. "Darling, you think I needed that girl? I bought a phone with cash just to talk to her. She was the easy part. So were you, until now."

The porch light buzzed above us.

"Why?" I asked.

Theresa looked past me at our red door.

"I gave that man a year," she said. "I picked his suits. I got him the seminar he wanted. I sat beside him at every one of those dreary dinners, and then he took me out to the club parking lot and handed back my ring like a library book."
