Cade tried to take the envelope back, and I held it over my head.
"It's not finished," he said.
"It's four lines and a drawing of a dog."
"You said read it when you're brave."
"I wrote that before I knew how long brave would take."
I read it that night, on the porch roof, with a flashlight in my teeth and him pretending to examine the gutters.
It was one page in his square handwriting.
