Chapter 15: Morning Show

Cora said her plan out loud in the kitchen, so the dish could hear it.

"Thursday, six a.m., I'll be on a national morning show, live from Columbus," she said. "I'm announcing Delaney Labs, and I'm naming my first three clients."

Pearl gaped at her.

Ronan put a finger over his mouth, and then he picked up the dish and carried it out to the porch.

"That was true," Cora said, when he came back. "All of it. Why did you take it out?"

"Because I want her to hear the rest of the week through a wall," Ronan said. "Let her think she's winning."

The booking was real.

A producer had left a message with Ronan's office on Monday, after the gala video passed four million views.

Cora had not called her back until now.

Thursday morning she sat in a makeup chair in a downtown Columbus studio, with Pearl in the next chair in her best cardigan, refusing powder.

"I don't need paint," Pearl said. "I've got a face."

"You have a beautiful face," the makeup artist said.

"I know that." Pearl accepted the powder.

The host was a sleek woman in her forties with a famous smile and a card in her hand.

She waved at them from the set.

"Ladies, you're on in two minutes. It's a friendly chat, I promise."

"It won't be," Cora said.

The host laughed, and the red light came on.

"Our next guest went viral last week when her husband divorced her on live television," the host said. "She says she's the author of the software behind Maddox Systems. Cora Delaney, welcome."
