Chapter 19: The Shares

I got out of the car before Anson could.

"Give me that," I said to the tall lawyer, and held out my hand.

He gave me the envelope, because the cameras were rolling, and a man in a suit does not refuse a woman in front of a camera.

I tore it open and read it out loud.

"Rotherham Logistics owes thirty-one million dollars. Interest accrues at nine percent. The first page says the total due is thirty-four million six hundred thousand."

"Page two says thirty-three million eight hundred thousand."

The tall man cleared his throat. "That's a rounding difference."

"It's eight hundred thousand dollars. On your own letterhead. In the same document."

"Which number would you like him to pay?"

His mouth opened and shut.

Behind me, a cameraman snorted.

"You've given him three days," I said. "The loan agreement requires thirty."

"I've read the agreement. I read it in the car."

I handed the envelope back.

"Tell Mr. Whitcroft his lawyers owe him a rounding error."

Dot, coming up behind me with my mother's blanket, said, "That was the hottest thing I've seen all week," and she meant it.

We took my mother up in the freight elevator.

The butler settled her in Anson's bed with a hot water bottle and three pillows, and she fell asleep with her fist closed over the edge of the sheet.

Dot took the couch and was snoring in four minutes.

Anson stood at the kitchen counter, with his back to me, running water into a glass he did not drink.

"They'll auction the company on Friday," he said. "It won't matter what the contract says."
