Chapter 7: One Couch
I pushed the pen back across the glass with one finger.
"I'd like my own lawyer to read it first," I said.
The whole table inhaled.
My father's smile did not move, and that was the first thing that frightened me.
"Of course," he said. "A sensible girl. Take all the time you need."
He took the pen back and slid it into his pocket without a word.
The old man with the mustache coughed into his fist.
"One more thing, since we're all here," my father added lightly.
"The Journal is running a story on our two lovebirds. A fiancée who lives under her father's roof looks like a hostage."
"A fiancée who lives with her fiancé looks like a romance."
"Anson has the penthouse. You two should be together this week, for the cameras."
I looked at Anson.
His face had gone stiff.
I thought about the text on his phone, and the keys in his hand at midnight, and the loan schedule in his folder.
Term three. We audit each other's books, and nobody hides anything.
"Fine," I said. "I'll go."
Anson's head came up.
"Wonderful," my father said, and I could not hear one false note.
That evening I carried one suitcase and four boxes of paper into Anson Rotherham's home.
It was on the top floor of the glass tower, and it was almost empty.
The living room held a gray couch, one lamp and a long black table.
"Where's the rest of it?" I asked.
"I sold it."
"The furniture?"
"The art went first. Then the rugs. Then the guest bed in March." He set my suitcase down. "Term two says separate rooms. I'm sorry. There's only one room with a bed."
