Chapter 24: Her Name on the Glass

Six weeks later, Boone painted her name on the glass.

He did it at dawn, standing on a stepladder in the cold with a thin brush.

The letters came out the same gold as the seams in the blue vase.

Dr. Mara Sizemore, DVM.

Pine Creek Veterinary Clinic, underneath.

Mara stood on the sidewalk with her coffee and read it from the outside, where everyone in Blackwater Ridge could see.

She had never put her name on anything.

For six years her name had been a thing she borrowed from her brother.

"Too big?" Boone asked from the ladder.

"No."

"The G's a little crooked."

"It's perfect."

He climbed down and wiped his hands.

She kissed him on the mouth in the middle of Main Street, as the diner and the bakery opened their doors.

Nobody looked away.

The bakery woman waved.

Inside, the clinic was already warm.

Dean had the radio on and was sorting a stack of invoices.

Nash sat on the front desk with the puppy in his lap, and the puppy was eating his shoelace.

Wyatt stood by the window with the county paper folded under his arm.

"It's in the paper," he said.

"Read it."

"The husband pleaded guilty yesterday. Kidnapping, assault, and the attempted murder. Thirty-one years."

Mara waited for the old fear.

It did not come.

She felt only a plain, quiet relief.
