The Reason a Piano Tuner Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Midsummer
On Saturday evening the music room held sixty chairs and a smell of beeswax.
Every window was open an inch, because the Dowager did not believe in a stuffy room.
I stood at the double doors in a new gown of dark green silk.
The housekeeper and two maids had sewn it in a day and a night.
It was cut plain, and it fitted, and it had pockets.
In one pocket I had a tuning fork.
In the other I had my father's card.
He had pressed it into my hand at the stairs, white with ink still bright on it.
*Tallis & Daughter. Pianofortes tuned and mended. Ashvane, Hertfordshire.*
He had had it printed in Hatfield in April, on the road here.
"I've been waiting for the right week," he had said.
The guests came in by twos and threes.
I knew a good many of them now, by their faces if not their names.
The vicar came, with his hat in his hand, and gave me a bow that was nearly a bob.
The six young women came with their mothers.
The girl in lavender stopped by me and said, very low, "I hummed all morning, Your Grace."
"I believe it was a B flat. I believe it was in tune."
