Chapter 6: The Night Nurse
I went down the long drive on foot.
Margaret came with me, and Levi walked a step behind with his phone already at his ear.
Nobody had told us to wait, and nobody tried to stop me.
At the iron gate a security guard stood with his arms spread, blocking a woman in a pastel dress.
She was holding a manila envelope against her chest. Her silver bob was perfect.
Her pearl earrings were in.
Behind her, a silver sedan idled at the curb with its passenger door open and my sister in the seat. Bree had a coat pulled up over her white party dress from the night before.
A delivery van had stopped across the road. The driver leaned on his horn, then lowered his window and lifted his phone.
"Cora!" Lorna cried. "Oh, thank God. Cora, baby, come here."
She said it loudly enough for the driver to hear.
I stopped ten feet from the gate.
"Hello, Mom."
"They've been keeping you from me. I came the moment I figured out where you were."
"You didn't figure it out. You followed his car."
"I'm your mother," she said, and held up the envelope. "I'm your mother, and I have the paper to prove it."
"Show me."
The guard looked at Levi. Levi nodded.
She pushed a sheet through the bars.
It was a faded pink form with a hospital letterhead at the top. St. Brigid's. Girl, born March fourth, mother Lorna Moynihan, father Dale Moynihan.
Under it, in blue pen, someone had signed: L. Moynihan, RN.
Levi took the sheet before I could and read it once.
