Chapter 9: Beloved Son

Levi's POV

I didn't tell Cora where I was going.

She had told me twice that she didn't want my help, and I believed her, so I went and did it anyway.

Dale Moynihan's pickup was easy to find.

It was parked outside the gates of Mount Calvary Cemetery at six in the evening, with a thermos on the dash and the engine off.

I left my car beside it and walked in.

He was sitting on the grass in front of a small gray stone, in the same work jacket, with a coffee tin in his lap.

He heard me and didn't turn around.

"I thought it'd be Margaret Hartwell's lawyer," he said.

"It's only me."

"Is she all right? Cora?"

"She went on live television this morning and made your wife leave the set."

Dale let out a sound that might have been a laugh. It cracked in the middle.

"That's her," he said. "She always did it quiet. Then she'd do it all at once."

I stood beside him and read the stone.

DANIEL MOYNIHAN. MARCH 3. BELOVED SON.

There was no year on it.

"There's no year," I said.

"Lorna ordered it. She said a year would just remind everybody." He rubbed his face. "I paid for it, and I never asked who dug the hole."

"Is there a hole?"

"I don't know." He looked up at me for the first time, and his eyes were red. "I've come here on March third for twenty-two years, Mr. Rhodes, because she made Cora come. I stood behind my daughter every year while she cried at this thing. And every year I thought, there's nothing under it. And I never once said it out loud."
