Chapter 4: The Ridge Gate
The sky over the hills turned grey, and Demelza walked up the hill to MacShane Ridge in Nan's old corduroys and Rafe's second coat.
Nan walked on her left with a thermos of tea.
Rafe walked on her right.
Behind them came twelve Kincaid wolves in two lines, silent, with their hands visible and their boots wet.
Thirty Brocklehurst guards stood across the Ridge gate in a line of their own.
The Beta stood in front of them with his arms folded.
He was a heavy man with a grey beard, and he had been Hoyt's father's right hand before he was Hoyt's.
"That's far enough," he said.
Demelza stopped ten feet from him.
"Good morning," she said.
"Alpha's orders. Nobody goes on the Ridge."
"It's my land."
"It was the Brocklehursts' land when you went to bed last night."
"It was mine before that, and it's mine again now."
Rafe held up the roll of paper without a word.
The Beta looked at it and did not take it.
"The charter says the heir stands on the Ridge at first light after the bond ends by the Alpha's word," Rafe said. "The Alpha spoke it himself, in front of the whole pack. You were one of them."
"I know what I heard."
"Then you know what happens to the wolf who blocks an heir at first light."
The Beta's jaw worked under the beard.
It was the oldest rule in the pack law: whoever bars a MacShane from MacShane land answers to the Council.
Demelza did not raise her voice.
"I'm going to walk through that gate," she said. "I'm not going to hit anyone. You can step aside, or you can explain to the Council why you didn't."
