Chapter 13: The Invoice

I picked the box back up.

"No," I said.

"No?"

"I'm not doing it."

Lu Ming nodded slowly, like he'd expected that.

"That's your answer."

"That's my answer."

He closed the folder and put it under his arm.

"You're making a mistake."

"I've made worse."

"Have you."

He stood up.

"Your father made a worse one," he said. "He had a wife and two children and he walked out of the door for a woman he'd known eight weeks. You know how I know that?"

I didn't answer.

"Because your sister told my cousin, and my cousin tells me things."

I stood there with the box in my hands.

"You should go," I said.

"I'm going."

He walked past me to the door.

He stopped with his hand on it.

"One hundred and twenty yuan," he said. "The entry fee."

"It's on your account."

"It is."

He opened the door and went out.

I stood in the judges' room for a minute by myself.

Then I picked up the lamp bag and went home.

I should have known it was too easy.

The next morning at nine there was a notice on the studio door.

I got to the building at ten and there were four people standing in front of it reading it.

I read it over their shoulders.

NOTICE. The following student equipment in Studio 3 has been placed on administrative hold pending a review of purchase records: one bench, one lamp, one clamp set, one adhesive kit, one tool roll.
