Chapter 18: Halloween
At one in the morning on Halloween, my dining room was full of pirates.
The restaurant had closed at midnight, and the staff party had started in the first five minutes after the last check.
Chairs were pushed back, and the lights were low.
One of the line cooks worked a phone and a speaker from the host stand.
Three of my cooks wore eye patches and plastic hooks.
The dishwasher was a hot dog.
He had made the costume himself out of two foam pool noodles and a yellow poncho.
He danced in it by the kitchen door with total dignity.
"Chef!" one of the pirates shouted. "Chef is here! Who are you supposed to be?"
I stood in the doorway in a navy blazer, a name tag and a pair of reading glasses I did not need.
I held a clipboard.
"The health inspector," I said.
The room went silent for a moment.
Then my entire kitchen staff started to boo, and I took a bow.
It was the happiest I had been in that building in a long time.
They had lived through three inspections with me and one very bad week with the walk-in.
It was the only thing in the world they all hated equally.
"You're not even going to check the fridge?" a cook shouted.
