Chapter 22: The Roof

Mateo's POV

She said yes against my mouth on the bar, and she was still saying it at six that morning when she woke me by standing on the bed.

"Up," Paulina said. "I want to show you something."

"It's dark."

"It won't be."

She had a quilt over one arm and a thermos in the other hand.

She wore her coat over nothing I could see, and a gray wool hat pulled down to her eyebrows.

I found my jeans.

She led me down the hall to the closet by the bathroom, where she pushed aside a vacuum and an ironing board and pointed up.

There was a square hatch in the ceiling, and a steel ladder bolted to the back wall.

"I found it in August," she said. "My landlord says never to go up."

"Have you?"

"No. I didn't want to go up alone."

I looked at the ladder, and the hatch, and her.

I climbed first.

The hatch was stuck, and I pushed it up with my shoulder, and the cold fell in on my face.

The roof of the duplex was flat, tar paper and gravel, with a low brick wall around the edge and a vent pipe in the middle.

The air was twenty-eight degrees and so still that the smoke from a neighbor's chimney went straight up.

I put out a hand, and she came up through the hatch after me.

We stood on the roof of her house in the dark with the whole neighborhood quiet beneath us.

The sky over the plains to the east had started to pale, a thin green line under the black.
