Chapter 6: Thursday Close

My ex-husband was leaning on the hood of his Subaru, which he had parked across the front of the restaurant with the hazards on.

I saw him from the kitchen door.

The two line cooks behind me saw him too, and so did the dishwasher, who stopped drying his hands on his apron.

It was five to one on Thursday morning, cold and dry, and the street smelled of wet leaves.

He wore a fleece vest over a pressed shirt, and he held his phone out in front of him.

"There she is," he said, pleasant. "Paulina. I thought we'd talk."

"We don't talk, we have lawyers."

"I'm not here to fight."

He turned the screen toward me.

It showed three receipts in a column, each for fourteen dollars and forty cents, each with a driver's name at the bottom.

"Mateo," he read. "Three nights in a row, from this address to yours, at one in the morning. On my card. Who is Mateo?"

Behind me one of the cooks shifted his weight.

"He's a driver."

"He's a driver who takes you around Washington Park for forty minutes," my ex-husband said. "I looked at the maps. I'm not angry. I'm concerned about you. You've been under a lot of strain, and you're out alone at all hours, and you're making choices."

"Get in the car," he said. "I'll drive you home, and we can sort out the account like adults."

For seven months I had been the one who apologized first.

He had a way of letting a pause stretch until I filled it.

I had filled it so many times that I could feel myself opening my mouth.

I did not open it.

I took out my phone instead, and thumbed the app awake, and found the screen with his name on it.
