Chapter 10: Camera
In Houston, a stranger sat at Bev's board.
He was twenty-five or so, in a black quarter-zip with the label's logo on the chest.
I stopped in the corridor outside the Well with my duffel on my shoulder.
"Where's Bev?" I said.
"Front of house," he said, not looking up. "Reassigned. I'm your engineer now."
"I don't have an engineer. I have Bev."
"Mr. Pellam signed the change this morning."
He said it the way people say the name of a god.
Down the long corridor I could see Bev, standing alone by a stack of road cases.
Her arms were folded across her Carhartt vest.
She lifted her chin at me.
It said, plainly, look up.
I opened the door of the Well and stepped inside.
The foam, the stool, the mic and the honey-water cooler were exactly as I had left them.
The same little monitor glowed in the wall.
I looked up.
In the upper corner above the door, a black glass dome the size of a hockey puck was bolted to the ceiling.
A thin green light burned in the middle of it.
I stood very still.
It pointed straight down at the stool, and straight down at me.
