Chapter 10: I Do

"Is it true?" I asked.

"Yes."

Brett's smile spread across his whole face.

"Go home, Brett," Laurence said, without looking at him.

Brett went.

The doors along the hall closed one by one.

I walked back into the suite, and Laurence followed and shut the door.

"Three years ago, your name came up at our Christmas party," he said. "Brett told the story. He made it a joke. I asked for the name of your shop."

"Why?"

"Because I thought a woman who'd walk out of that room had a reason, and nobody had asked her what it was."

"And you hired me."

"My assistant booked your shop for two of our galas. I never met you. I didn't look at your invoices."

"And when I walked into your office three weeks ago and offered you a wife."

"I said yes in one minute." His voice was level. "You'd done the thinking, and I'd done mine three years earlier. I should have told you."

"You let me think I was choosing."

"You were."

"You knew I'd come."

"I knew you might. I didn't know when." He looked at the floor, then at me. "If you want to call it off, say so. I'll walk down to that lobby and tell every person in it that the wedding is cancelled and it was my fault."

I stood at the window and looked at the lake.

I wanted to be furious.

What I felt was that for three years a man in Chicago had been asking about me, and I had not known.

"New term," I said.

"Name it."

"I get one question, any time, and you answer it straight. No managing me."

"Done."

"And you tell me everything about my family you find. Before you tell your lawyers."

"Done."

"Then I'm marrying you at four."

His shoulders came down.

"All right," he said.

At 3:45, I stood in the bridal suite in my mother's lace.
