Chapter 23: The Retraction

The Cedar Landing Ledger came out on Thursday with one story on the front page.

It filled the whole top half, under a headline in the biggest type the paper owned.

THE LEDGER WAS WRONG ABOUT DELANEY WHALLEY.

Below it ran my father's statement, signed with his full name and printed word for word.

He wrote that he had spent his daughter's wedding money on payroll.

He wrote that he had forged her signature on a withdrawal slip, and that she had never stolen anything from anyone.

At the bottom, in a box, the editor apologized.

It took him four lines to say he regretted the error and one line to say he had relied on a trusted source.

I read it standing on my mother's porch with a cup of coffee.

Laurence read it over my shoulder.

"They've left out the housekeeper," he said.

"The one who photographed the contract?"

"The sheriff found her last night. Marlene paid her two hundred dollars." He turned the page. "Marlene's the one who handed it to the paper."

"She'll have enough to think about."

By ten o'clock a car was parked on the lake road.

By eleven there were seven.

By noon the line started at the end of my mother's drive and went all the way to the mailbox.

People stood in it holding dishes with foil on top.

They held flowers from their own gardens.

One man held a rake, for no reason I could work out, and when I asked him he said he had been meaning to return it since 2017.

They came up the porch steps one at a time.

Laurence stood behind my chair and said nothing, which was a talent he had.

The first to reach me was the Ledger's editor.
