Chapter 12: The Crypt
"I won't say it until I'm sure," said Wenna.
She sat on the edge of the tower bed with a cup of tea in both hands, and she hadn't touched it.
"Sister," Isabeau said. "You've gone white twice since you woke up. Say it."
"If I'm wrong, I'll have broken your heart for nothing." She looked at the king, who stood at the window with his arms crossed. "There is a book. The Cathedral crypt holds it. The First Ledger of the Flame."
"What is it?"
"Every Saintess who ever lived is written in it. Her name, her years, her gifts. The first High Priest began it two hundred years ago."
She looked into her cup.
"I saw it once, as a novice. I was told it was too holy for my eyes."
"And you want to read it now."
"I want you to read it," said Wenna. "With me. Tonight."
Corvane Cathedral stood at the top of the lower town, a great grey barn of a church.
Since the Temple's healers had walked out, nobody had gone near it.
