Chapter 15: Worship
So he said it all again.
Wenna left first.
She took the ledger in both arms and went out without a word.
A minute later Isabeau heard Torvin on the stairs, saying something gruff about tea.
The door closed.
Veyron and Isabeau stood in the tower room, in the grey morning light, looking at each other.
"Not here," she said.
"Where?"
"The throne."
His eyes lit.
They walked down through the Citadel hand in hand, past the guards at every stair, who looked at the floor.
The throne hall was empty, and the high windows threw long colored bars across the stone.
The bone throne stood waiting on its dais.
Isabeau climbed the steps alone.
She turned, and sat down on it.
It was cold and hard and carved in ribs, and she settled against the pale back.
Veyron stood at the bottom of the steps.
He looked up at her, a Demon King in a black shirt, with the sunlight in his horns.
"Come here," she said.
He climbed the steps slowly.
At the top, he did something she had never seen him do for anyone.
He went down on both knees.
The sound of it echoed in the empty hall.
"Isabeau," he said, very quietly.
"Say it."
"Where do I start?"
"Anywhere."
He took her foot in both hands.
She was barefoot, in her robe, and he cradled her heel in his palm and pressed his mouth to her ankle.
