Chapter 18: The Cell
They put her in an ox cart.
It was a wooden cage on wheels, barred on all four sides.
It was parked in the lee of the Wheel's black frame, with two templars at the door.
The collar sat cold on Isabeau's throat.
She sat in the straw and tried to feel her own hands.
She could feel them.
She could not feel anything inside them.
For the first hour, she did what she had done as a child in the Temple, when she was frightened.
She folded her hands and waited to be told what to do.
Nobody came.
The sun went down behind the hill, and the camp lit its fires, twenty thousand small orange lights spread across the valley.
She heard the chanting start at the Wheel.
It was the acolytes, praying through the night to bring the disc to its full height.
Dawn was in ten hours, and Isabeau was done waiting.
She sat up and put her fingers on the collar.
It was a smooth ring of Sunstone, no wider than a finger, with a seam at the back where the clasp had been sealed.
