Chapter 23: The Treaty
The treaty table stood in the middle of the river bridge.
It was a long plank of white oak, set exactly on the center stone.
The human lords stood on the east bank and the demon captains on the west.
Behind each side stood a hundred soldiers, none armed.
The King of Aurenmar sat at the eastern end in a fur-lined cloak.
He was a heavy man with a gold circlet and a face like a closed door.
He did not look at the demon king.
He looked at Isabeau.
"Saintess Isabeau Verrane," he said. "You have caused a great deal of trouble."
"I have told the truth, Your Majesty."
"You have stood in front of twenty thousand of my soldiers and called the Temple a liar."
"I read from the Temple's own book."
"You read from a book written by a dead priest, in a cipher no one but a schoolteacher can read."
The King's voice was flat and cold.
"The Temple has stood for two hundred years. It collects the tithes that pay for my army. It crowned my grandfather."
