Chapter 17: Ultrasound
Two hundred women were watching him.
Gran had stopped pouring.
Shauna had her pen raised over her legal pad.
"Not here," I said.
"Lauren, please."
"Not in front of a wall of other people's weddings." I took my feet off the crate. "My next scan is Tuesday at ten. You can come to that one."
His shoulders dropped.
"Thank you."
"One," I said. "You can come to one. Then we'll see."
He nodded.
He turned to go, and stopped, and looked at the window where Aidan's parents hung side by side.
He looked at it for a long time.
Then he walked out through two hundred brides without saying another word.
On Tuesday, Aidan drove me.
He didn't ask whether he should.
He was outside Gran's house at nine with the van washed, which I had never seen before.
"You cleaned it," I said.
"Shauna told me the father was coming. I wasn't going to have him see you get out of a dirty van."
"It's not a competition."
