Chapter 19: Two Brides
Nobody breathed.
Two women in the same dress looked at each other across a room full of brides.
Hers was ivory.
Mine was candlelight.
Hers had my great-grandmother's lace.
Mine had Gran's pearls.
The same square neck.
The same thirty buttons.
The Globe photographer lifted his camera, and then lowered it, like he couldn't decide which of us to point it at.
Madeline walked to the middle of the floor and stopped under the chandelier.
She'd had her hair done.
She was wearing the black pearl on its chain.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," she said, in her soft public voice. "I wasn't invited. I just thought everyone should see the original."
Shauna started forward.
Gran caught her by the back of her smock.
"This is my wedding dress," Madeline said. She turned once, slowly, so the room could see the buttons. "I wore it at Trinity Church in June. And now she's copying it, and selling it, and calling it her line."
A woman near the front said, "Well, it's her pattern."
