Chapter 31: The Third Dress

I took the box out of Gran's hands and set it on my kitchen table, next to last night's fish and chips paper.

I touched the lace with one finger.

It was the same lace that had blown in the sea wind on a terrace in Italy.

The same hands had made it.

"I'm not using the old pattern," I said.

Gran raised her eyebrows.

"That pattern was for a girl who was waiting," I said. "I'm not waiting for anything."

"Then draw," Gran said. "We've got nine weeks."

We set the date that afternoon.

Friday, May seventh.

One year to the day since the bell rang and Madeline pointed at my window and said, That one.

"You want to get married on that day?" Shauna said. "On purpose?"

"I want that day back," I said.

I drew the dress that night, in my new kitchen, with the baby asleep in the next room and Aidan's light on across the street.

It took me twenty minutes.

I'd been drawing it in my head for a month.

Soft white silk crepe that moved when I moved.

A low, wide neck that sat on the edge of my shoulders.
