Chapter 4: Two Inches

I looked at the card.

Waist, 34. Then a line through it, and 36 written beside it, pressed so hard the pen had nearly gone through.

"He told me thirty-four," Aidan said. "Twice. With confidence."

"He's been telling me thirty-four for three years."

"Then you've both been lied to."

I opened the door the rest of the way.

He didn't come in.

He stood on the top step with his hands in his pockets, looking at the threshold.

"You can come in," I said. "It's a door, not a moat."

"My father told me if I ever set foot in Furlong's, your grandmother would put a hex on my trousers."

"Is that a Kehoe?" Gran called from the back. "In my shop?"

"See," Aidan said.

"He's on the step, Gran. He's technically outside."

"Tell him his grandfather owed me a veil."

Aidan raised an eyebrow at me.

"What does that mean?"

I sighed.

"1974," I said. "A bride from the Cathedral parish. Gran made the dress. Your grandfather made the groom's suit. The groom left her at the altar at Holy Cross and ran off to Quincy with the organist."

"I know this story. Your grandmother said the groom ran because our suit pinched."

"Your grandfather said he ran because our veil looked like a shower curtain."

"It was a long veil."

"It was cathedral length."

"He said it fogged up the whole church."

Shauna came out of the workroom with her smock half off and stopped dead.

She looked at Aidan on the step.

She looked at me holding the door.

She went right back into the workroom without a word, and I heard her laugh into a bolt of tulle.

"Your grandfather put a sign in his window," I said. "Grooms, we'll make you look better than the dress."

"Your great-grandmother put one in hers. Brides, we'll make you look better than the groom. Which was easier."
