Chapter 13: Playing It Straight
Dean walked me down all three flights, and I let him.
At the street door he looked across the road at the truck.
"That's him?"
"That's Elliot."
"Does he know any of this?"
"He's about to."
Elliot was out of the truck before I reached the curb.
He took one look at my face and didn't ask a single question.
He just opened the passenger door and waited until I was inside.
I told him in the cab, with the heater roaring.
"Trenton thinks I turned him down. He has spent a year punishing me for it."
Elliot's hands stayed on the wheel.
"A no you never said," he said slowly.
"Yes."
"And Brynn knew that every day she sat across from him."
"Brynn has known it for ten years. She was at his table on Sunday, passing him the salt."
He was quiet for a long moment.
"It doesn't excuse him," he said.
"No."
"Good. If you'd said it did, I'd have had to get out and walk."
Margo was waiting in the kitchen in her robe, with the casserole warm in the oven and her glasses on their chain.
She took one look at the two of us and sat down.
"Tell me," she said.
I told her the short way.
"I won't play it again tonight," I said. "I can't."
"Then you won't," said Margo, and put a plate in front of me.
Elliot leaned on the counter with his arms folded.
"We tell Trenton now," he said. "Tonight, tomorrow morning, before Brynn can get to him."
"He'll go straight to her," Margo said. "A man who's been lied to by a woman won't take it from the woman he's wronged. He'll take it from the one in his bed, and she'll cry."
"Then we tell nobody and wait for the wedding."
"No," I said.
