Chapter 4: What Ivy Saw

I woke up with my face against Tobias's shirt and his arm still around me.

He hadn't moved all night.

I could tell by how stiff his shoulder was when I sat up.

"Sorry," I said. "I think I used you as a pillow."

"You used me as a pillow, a blanket and a foot warmer." He flexed his fingers. "I'm not complaining."

Sunlight was pouring through the thin curtains, hard and white off the ice.

Outside, a plow scraped past, and the whole parking lot sparkled.

He was watching me with a look I couldn't read.

"What?" I said.

"Nothing. You snore a little."

"I do not."

"Like a very polite cat."

I threw the moose at him.

We were still laughing when my phone started buzzing on the nightstand.

Not Connor.

Ivy.

I answered on speaker.

"Are you alone?" she said, no hello.

"I'm in a motel room with your brother."

"Perfect, he should hear this too." Her voice was low and fast, like she was calling from a bathroom stall. "I'm sending you something. Don't watch it with a mouthful of coffee."

My phone chimed.

I opened the video.

The clip was only a few seconds long, shot from behind a potted plant in a hotel lobby.

The elevator doors were open.

Lacey stood inside with her cardigan half off one shoulder.

Connor had one hand flat on the wall by her head.

She went up on her toes, and he kissed her.

Then Lacey slid her hand into his back pocket and pulled him in, and the doors closed on both of them.

The clip ended on a blank steel door.

I sat still for a long moment.
