Chapter 18: What My Father Wrote
The letter was one page in my father's square print.
I read it standing at the counter with Isaiah beside me and the coffee going cold.
"Tam. I have decided to say his name on the record. An Army investigator will take my statement Saturday at ten. I would like you in the room. Dad."
There was a postscript.
"Bring the boy."
"He means you," I said.
"He means me." Isaiah took off his glasses and wiped them on his shirt. "Which one of us is the boy?"
"The one who'll be told to wait in the hall."
He was told to wait in the hall.
The room at the barracks had a metal table, three chairs and a recorder with a red light.
The investigator from Quantico was a lean woman in a gray suit who did not smile.
My father sat across from her with his hands folded on the table.
I sat at his elbow.
He had shaved that morning, and a thin cut showed on his jaw.
"State your name and rank for the record," she said.
"Orville Burris, Colonel, retired."
"Colonel Burris, you pled guilty at your court-martial to signing the Tolliver brake sheets."
