Chapter 23: The Day He Said Thank You
Isaiah read his letter at the counter, standing up, with a mug of coffee going cold at his elbow.
It was one page.
His suspension was lifted.
His badge and credentials would be returned to him by the provost marshal on Friday at eight.
He was named lead investigator on the case against Mace Redfern, reporting to the general.
He read it twice and set it down.
"Well," he said.
"Well?"
"They want me back."
"Of course they do."
"I'd thought I might feel more."
"You will."
He pushed the paper toward me and picked up the mug, and I saw that his hand was perfectly steady.
I opened mine.
It was heavy paper with a seal.
The Department of the Army had reviewed the record of Captain Jessamine Burris, resigned.
It had found that her testimony was truthful, necessary and given at personal cost.
It corrected her file to read resigned in good standing.
Below that, in a smaller paragraph, it said she might apply to return to active service at her old rank, and that her application would be considered with favor.
