Chapter 32: The Steady Voice

"Yes," I said.

He didn't move.

"Say it again," Ben said.

"Yes. I'll marry you. Ask me in the morning if you want, and I'll say it again."

He picked me up off the church steps and turned me around once in the snow.

The side door banged open, and Lena stood there with her cardigan over her head and her glasses fogged.

"I knew it," she said. "I called it in October."

"You called a landlord," Ben said.

A man locked out of his truck.

A girl of seven who had called to ask whether you could dial 911 to report that your brother was being rude.

I told her that it was not an emergency but that her mother would like to hear about it.

At 2:09, the line lit.

I'd been in that chair for nine years, and I knew the sound of a line that meant it.
